Preventative maintenance is critical for getting the most life out of your truck, and using the right oil is equally important. Not all 1500s are created equal, meaning the right RAM 1500 oil type depends on the engine package you selected when you purchased your vehicle. 

The Right RAM 1500 Oil Type Depends On the Engine

The type of oil recommended by the manufacturer varies based on factors like the year/make/model and the type of engine. Using the appropriate oil weight is critical, especially when you live in areas that experience extreme temperatures. 

If you have a RAM 1500 with a 5.7L HEMI, you should use an SAE 5W-20 synthetic blend motor oil. Typically, RAM 1500 trucks take six quarts during an oil change. However, you should fill the HEMI with seven because of the engine’s size difference. 

The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine requires a 5W-40 synthetic blend motor oil. This version of the RAM 1500 also requires DEF fluid. Based on manufacturer recommendations, you’ll achieve the best results using MOPAR DEF fluid. 

If your RAM 1500 has the 3.6L Pentastar V6, you’ll want to use six quarts of SAE 0W-20 synthetic motor oil in the engine’s main bearings, camshafts, and valvetrain areas. Because of the eTorque system on this version of the 1500, you must use SAE 5W-20 in the front axle and rear differentials. 

Bear in mind, however, that using the right 1500 oil type makes no difference if you’re not mindful of a routine service schedule. With that in mind, it’s not a bad idea to log each benchmark to satisfy preventative maintenance requirements. 

Are You Due for a RAM 1500 Oil Change or Maintenance?

Fortunately, RAM 1500 trucks notify you when it’s time to perform oil changes and other maintenance. However, you can’t go wrong by tracking these service times annually:

• Change your RAM 1500 synthetic oil blend and filter every 7,500 miles. If you have the EcoDiesel, hold off until 10,000 miles. It’s also best to rotate your tires every other oil change. 
• Every 30,000 miles, schedule a transmission flush and have the engine and cabin air filters replaced. 
• At the 100,000-mile mark, it’s time to replace the spark plugs, wires, PVC joints, and have the axles, and transfer case inspected. 
• During any service or fluid changes, check the brake condition and fluid level in the master cylinder. Next, top off the power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and inspect the tires for proper inflation.
